<Identity and the contemporary era of today represented by manufactured goods in private spaces>
People who live in this age have distinct, individual characteristics compared to the previous era due to the multi-cultural lives of today. The particularities made with different tastes and different environments compose each individual's identity. My work derives from the idea that both individual's identity and the relationship between each individual's identity can specifically represent today's society.
One of the most effective ways to learn the characteristics of the times is to analyze the concrete lives of individuals and their relationships with the society. My aim is to present the identities of today's societies by painting selected goods that people have in their private spaces. Like a main role of a suspense film looking around the suspect's room to find out what kind of person he is, various products one possesses reveal the life of the owner. The individuality and identity of the contemporary era which could not be found through the media or newspapers can actually be detected in private spaces through the personal objects, even the delicate, secretive parts of one’s life. I paint various objects found in the rooms of strangers as well as the people I know. I believe each object’s individual characteristics directly (and sometimes indirectly giving the viewer a slight hint) show the overall characteristics of the whole society. By perceiving the contemporary time, one can understand the sociological characteristics of his time as well as his identity as a part that constructs the whole society.
My works may look as if they came right out of a magazine known as advertising photography because of the colorful images and the light, slick, crisp texture of the surface. Because of all these factors, sometimes my paintings may look complex and cryptic. There is no such thing as top or bottom in my painting just like Jackson Pollock's because the objects illustrated in my work are situated irregularly without any orders or hierarchy. All objects are painted in one canvas but each of them has been characterized and distinguished. Each object in the painting represents the subject matter. I use industrial paints to make paintings. Industrial paints reflect everyday life of today since most of stuff in everybody’s room are manufactured products and at least 8~90% of them are coated with industrial paints. The identity of individuals can be observed through each delineated object representing the contemporary society of the era.
